Post Op Instructions For Scaling and Root Planing (AKA "Deep Cleaning")
What can you expect after a getting a deep cleaning?
Following your scaling and root planing procedure—commonly referred to as a “deep cleaning”—you can expect to see improvements in your gum health, including reduced redness, swelling, and bleeding. Many patients also notice an overall fresher feeling in the mouth and improved taste sensation.
As the anesthesia wears off, it’s normal to experience some mild soreness in your gums. This discomfort is temporary and should subside within a day or two. During the healing process, your gums may shrink slightly, which can expose some root surfaces and lead to temporary sensitivity to cold temperatures or air. This is a typical part of the healing process and should improve with consistent home care.
With proper brushing, flossing, and regular professional cleanings, you’ll continue to notice less tenderness, inflammation, and bleeding—clear signs that your gum tissue is becoming healthier.
